The Hidden Intelligence of Non‑Speakers — And How We Can Finally Hear Them

22nd Feb 2026

If you’ve ever worked with or loved a non‑speaking autistic person, you’ve probably wondered: What is going on inside? The truth may surprise you.

Many non‑speakers are far more intelligent than their outward appearance suggests. Their challenges are not cognitive — they are motor‑based. Dyspraxia makes speech difficult, but it does not diminish intellect.

I witnessed this transformation with my young adult son.

For years, he appeared disengaged, distracted, or uninterested. But appearances can be deceiving. When he began spelling through S2C and Supported Typing, his true self emerged — articulate, thoughtful, humorous, and deeply aware.

This is not an isolated story.

Across the world, non‑speakers are proving that they understand far more than they can express. They are writing poetry, discussing philosophy, mastering academic content, and sharing insights that challenge everything we thought we knew about autism.

So what can we do?

  • Presume competence.

  • Speak to them as the intelligent individuals they are.

  • Offer communication methods that bypass speech.

  • Never discuss them in front of them as if they cannot understand.

Their minds are alive. Their thoughts are rich. Their voices are waiting.

It’s time we listen.
